Los Calientes Hot Sauce

August 07, 2019

Los Calientes, which is expertly manufactured by Karma Sauce and distributed by Heatonist, is quite a popular sauce we offer here at Chilly Chiles. This comes as no surprise, as it’s gained much attention from being a standard in the hot sauce lineup on First We Feast’s YouTube show Hot Ones, hosted by the one and only Sean Evans. I’m sure that anyone who is a fan of the show has always been curious about how this sauce tastes and why so many guests have greatly enjoyed it. I’ll straight up recommend this sauce to everyone. Really.

I will say, at first, I thought the hype was mostly the result of great branding and marketing of the product. Oh, how I was wrong. I’m really glad I decided to give it a try this year. It stands as one of my favourite Cali-Mex-inspired sauces ever as it is absolutely DELICIOUS. It’s got such a fresh, sweet, fruity, smoky, and exotic flavour profile that I find myself wanting to put it on literally everything I eat. It’s also worth mentioning that during his interview on the show, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay expressed that this sauce has a nice, zesty flavour!

All the flavours are perfectly balanced. It’s sweet and fragrant, with no ingredient overpowering another, and the fresh taste of the peppers being very noticeable upon tasting. I do tend to agree with the saying that, often times, the fewer ingredients a product has, the better. There are always exceptions though. Los Calientes definitely is one. All the ingredients were expertly selected to complement one another and make for a strong-flavoured and enjoyable sauce. I love straight up, simple, pepper-based sauces as much as the next guy, but sometimes it’s good to enjoy full-bodied, complex flavours!

Green serrano, applewood smoked green serrano, and orange habanero make up this sauce’s mild heat profile, which has fruity, smoky, and citrusy notes. Apple cider and apple cider vinegar help preserve the sauce, with an added sourness. The apricots complement the fruity taste of the peppers while the lemon juice brings some of that refreshing, citrusy tang. Tomatillo adds some tartness and the agave nectar makes the sauce a little sweeter, with the water balancing out the consistency and acidity. Garlic brings some zingy flavour with toasted onion adding some more smoky sweetness into the mix to complement the peppers. The earthy taste of the cumin is rather noticeable, and, in my opinion, really completes this product. Cilantro, with its citrusy flavour, is a very important ingredient in here, given that it’s got that fresh Mexican taste that many of us love. Salt and black pepper ensure that the product is well-seasoned while the celery seed, though very hard to detect, adds a warm, lightly bitter taste.

In terms of heat, I would give this one a 2 out of 10. It’s really mild, so the heat can never overpower the flavour in any case. Even if you have trouble with traditional milder sauces like Tabasco or Cholula, you’ll be able to handle this one! I would have liked to see it a tad hotter, possibly through the inclusion of more orange habaneros in the mix. At the same time however, this light heat makes it more accessible, so even my non-chile head friends can enjoy it!

Add Los Calientes to all your favourite dishes. This goes without saying but, you have to try it on Mexican and Tex-Mex food including tacos, nachos, quesadillas, burritos, tamales, huevos rancheros, and enchiladas. It’s also delicious with wings, tofu, rice and beans, grilled pork or beef tenderloin, shrimp, tuna, salmon, roasted veggies, baked potato, soups, and more.

Come by one of our store locations and give Los Calientes a try! If you care at all about hot sauce, you’ve got to AT LEAST give this one a taste. Check out our overwhelmingly positive customer reviews on the product page if you need more convincing! The hype is real!

As always, Keep it spicy!

Alexis

Fat Cat Surprisingly Mild Guajillo Ghost Hot Sauce

November 06, 2019

It’s a robust sauce with a smoky, tangy, and savoury flavour profile. What sticks out the most to me are the smoky Guajillo peppers and the cumin. It really is a marriage made in heaven! Water gives the sauce a more liquid consistency and balances out the acidity and salinity while...

Awesome

Great product and great delivery service.

Disappointed

Liked the flavour but tingles at first and the just faded away not a lot of heat

Not Really a Hot Sauce

I purchased this because it was on Hot Ones and because it gets really good reviews anywhere you look. I placed an order just to get this, but bought 4 other hot sauces since I was placing an order. I have to say, I love the other 4, Dirty Dick's, Bravado Crimson and Black Garlic, and Queen Majesty Scotch Bonnet and Ginger, but I don't really care for this. It's not so much a hot sauce, as it is a sour sauce. When you taste it sour/tart is the predominant flavor, you get the smokey flavor in the background and flavor of the moritas with a little warmth, but no heat. I wouldn't say it's bad, but it's not what I expected. And to be honest, I really don't know what to use it on, I tried it chicken sandwich and the whole thing had this tart flavor that didn't appeal to me. Great service from the site and price is great considering the size of the bottle, but this one is a flop for me.

Terrible

No spice. Tastes like HP sauce mixed with tomatoe sauce.
