Bone Suckin’ Hiccuppin’ Hot Sauce is very much like a barbecue sauce with the tantalizing heat of the habanero pepper. When I had first tried this sauce, I was actually very surprised by the heat. This is due to the fact that the colour and consistency is quite like a barbecue sauce, so I figured it was just a smaller-format barbecue sauce with “hot sauce” written on it. But oh, was I wrong! After taking in the initial smell of it I had realized that this sauce would pack a punch. The scent of the habaneros was quite detectable. I tried about a tablespoon of it on my chicken and absolutely loved the stinging heat balanced out with the bold flavour. This is a full-bodied sauce which has that classic depth and sweetness that we all love about barbecue sauces, while also bringing on the heat! I have no trouble understanding how it won the Fiery Food Challenge Golden Chile Award for Best Hot Sauce in the USA.
The habanero peppers provide the heat in this sauce, with their smoky-citrusy flavour, accompanied by the sweetness of the tomato paste, honey, and molasses. The apple cider vinegar and lemon juice make for a subtle citrusy and pungent tang, while the onions and garlic, though not very noticeable, do help with the overall robustness of the sauce. The mustard and horseradish complement the other ingredients with their tangy and sharp flavours. The natural Hickory smoke flavour provides that deep smokiness that we all love from a boldly sweet sauce like this one.
In terms of heat I would give this sauce a solid 5 out of 10. It packs a decent punch. Those who are just into barbecue sauces and are not as into habanero hot sauces will most likely find this sauce to be quite hot. The sweetness of the sauce, however, helps to balance out the heat, making it easier to tolerate for most. If you’re not a chile head like myself and are just curious, I would recommend you use this sauce mainly as a dip to start, in order to gauge how hot you find it. I highly recommend this sauce to all who enjoy a sweet heat! It may very well make you hiccup!
