High River Sauces makes some of the best products on the market today. Founded by Steve Seabury, the head organizer of various hot sauce expos across the U.S., this company has a great reputation of making savoury hot sauces made with unique ingredient combinations. They make bold, versatile, and down-right delicious sauces. They have all kinds of products including fruit-based hot sauces, a barbecue sauce, and a mustard-based hot sauce to name a few. High River Rogue Hot Sauce is among my favourite fruit-based sauces that’s made with superhot peppers. You may recognize this sauce from previous seasons on the First We Feast’s YouTube show Hot Ones. The guests tended to love it, and so do I! This sauce is bold and sweet, with a nice tang. It also packs a decent punch! The jolokia (ghost) peppers and scorpion chiles, with their fruity, sweet flavour, are what bring the heat in the sauce. The red serrano chiles also help balance out the heat with their crisp and bright flavour. These chiles provide a slow, lingering burn which perfectly match the other ingredients in this sauce. The blood orange concentrate and lime juice provide the citrusy-sweet flavour, while the pears and applesauce provide the fruitiness which complement the heat and flavour of the chiles. The brown sugar provides an added sweetness with the ginger and garlic adding a very subtle zing which completes this sauce.
In terms of heat I give this sauce a 6 out of 10. Even though this sauce includes some of the hottest peppers on the planet, the way they’re balanced out with the other ingredients, most notably the fruit, makes the heat more tolerable overall. I recommend this sauce for beginner and experienced chile heads alike. If you like the idea of a sweet hot sauce made with fresh, quality ingredients and want to kick things up a notch, you should definitely give this one a try!
I’ve added this sauce in stir fries, wonton soup, ramen, sandwiches, mayo, and grilled cheese. I’ve also used it as part of a glaze for chicken, beef, pork, and even veggies! It’s a great spicy dip for dumplings, spring rolls, fries, pizza, mozzarella sticks, and more. You can even make a vinaigrette with this sauce! Mix a few teaspoons of it with some olive oil and lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. Add it to all your favourite salads for an extra flavourful kick!
