Don’t be fooled by the name. Colon Cleaner is much more than a hilarious label. It’s a great example of style and substance combined! Though this may just seem like a novelty sauce, among many other humorous hot sauces named after certain bathroom-related puns, this one has a surprising amount of flavour! This sauce is not only a funny gift for a friend, family member, or co-worker, it’s an all-around savoury-sweet mustard-based hot sauce which also has many culinary uses! I, however, can’t confirm its colon cleaning efficacy.
This product is like a Caribbean mustard hot sauce from Barbados. It’s mustardy but also has a tang, sweetness, and overall savoury flavour profile. The Scotch Bonnet peppers, with their slightly sweet taste, provide the heat in this sauce. The mustard combined with the vinegar provide the tang while the turmeric adds more colour to the sauce and a bit of pungency to accentuate the mustard. Onions and the sugar add to the overall sweetness of the sauce, thus completing the flavour profile.
Heat-wise it’s not too overpowering at all. I rank this sauce as a 3 out of 10 for heat. It’s within the mild-medium range for me and I’m sure most people even hot sauce newbies will be able to appreciate the flavour and kick that it offers. It has all 5-star reviews on our website and comes as no surprise to me that the community loves it. It’s a very versatile sauce with a taste that is so easily enjoyable and applicable to all kinds of dishes! It has a kick, but just enough that when used modestly, can be appreciated for its delightful flavour.
Though this sauce is of course fantastic on all kinds of burgers, hot dogs, and sausages, its uses goes far beyond being a topping on these foods. Mix it in with mayonnaise or sour cream and enjoy it as a dip for your veggies, roasted potatoes, French fries, and more. It’s a great dip on its own as well, and makes for a tangy, sweet, and savoury salad dressing! And of course, use this sauce as a marinade or grilling sauce for your favourite meat or seafood. If you love that zesty mustard taste, this sauce is a must-try. I have used Colon Cleaner as a grilling/sautéing sauce for shrimp and chicken in the past and it was delicious. Enjoy it in your mac n cheese, oven-roasted Brussel sprouts, and in a stew or casserole. This sauce is also amazing with all kinds of breakfast food: eggs, omelets, breakfast sandwiches, you name it!
