Mikey V’s 7-Pot Primo Salsa

September 24, 2019

Mikey V’s Foods are a spicy food company out of Georgetown, Texas. Their aim is to offer high-quality products which are made with only the freshest, all-natural ingredients and with no artificial preservatives. They make everything ranging from hot sauces to spicy pickles, an award-winning smoked bacon salsa, and even spicy deep-fried garlic cloves, called “Gator Toes.” I have not had a chance to try them yet but I’m sure they’re delish!

This is a solid, great-tasting salsa. Even though it has 7-Pot Primos, one of the world’s hottest peppers, the other ingredients bring down the heat relatively well, making it much more accessible. Made with all fresh ingredients and also gluten-free, the manufacturers have kept the other ingredients to a minimum so that the flavour and heat of the peppers shine through.

Mikey V’s take on a classic red Mexican salsa with an extra notch of fresh heat is made from tomatoes, onions, lime juice, fresh garlic, and cilantro, which are the classic base for a good red salsa. They make for a sweet, citrusy, and fresh flavour profile. 7-Pot Primo and Jalapeno peppers add a pretty balanced heat with a fruity flavour. Pure cane sugar adds just a tad of sweetness to complement the acidity of the tomatoes and lime juice. I generally don’t enjoy salsas that are overly sweet, and this one definitely isn’t. It’s got the level of sweetness I’d say anyone would expect! Kosher salt and black pepper also help to ensure that it’s a well-seasoned product, with the cumin and other spices giving an extra hint of Mexican flavour at the end.

In terms of heat I would give this one a 6 out of 10. It’s not as hot as I thought it would be, but to me that’s not always a big deal. I was actually able to enjoy it with most of my family without anyone being in too much pain. It’s hot enough that I wouldn’t necessarily recommend you put it on the table at a big dinner party and have those “mild salsa” people give it a try. If you do want the whole family or group of friends to enjoy it, just let them know that it does indeed have a bite!

Use this salsa the way you would use any other one, keeping in mind that it’s got some kick! Many people use salsa quite simply: as a refreshing mix to scoop your tortillas chips in. There are other uses though that you may not have thought of. Put a couple of dollops on nachos, mac n’ cheese, mix it with mayo to make a spicy dip, and even stir it into scrambled eggs, omelets or frittatas! It’s of course delicious on tacos, in stews, soups, and chilis for a great kick and jolt of flavour. Add to burger meat mixtures or slather on top of grilled fish, puree it into an enchilada sauce, use in place of cocktail sauce for shrimp, or combine with cheese for jalapeño popper filling. Use it as a base for spicy bruschetta or even try it mixed with goat cheese for a tangy-spicy dip for veggies or crackers! So many possibilities!

If you really like living on the spicy side of life or are a person who gets tired of those “hot” salsas you find at the grocery store, Mikey V’s is always a great pick!

Come by one of our store locations and give Mikey V’s 7-Pot Primo Salsa a try!

As always, Keep it spicy!

Fat Cat Surprisingly Mild Guajillo Ghost Hot Sauce

November 06, 2019

It’s a robust sauce with a smoky, tangy, and savoury flavour profile. What sticks out the most to me are the smoky Guajillo peppers and the cumin. It really is a marriage made in heaven! Water gives the sauce a more liquid consistency and balances out the acidity and salinity while...

Hellfire Blueberry Hell Hot Sauce

October 23, 2019

This is one of my all-time favourites. It’s most probably my favourite super-hot fruit-based hot sauce I’ve ever had the pleasure to enjoy. When we usually hear “fruit-based hot sauce” we assume that makes its possible uses rather limited. That is not the case with Blueberry Hell, as I will discuss in more depth further down.

Brutal, very hot, taste was really bad

This was just stinking hot, tastes hotter than a lot of other sauces but the heat over powers you and it is not a great taste, was good for a hot wing challenge but I would use as recommended on the bottle to just add heat to something like soup or chili if you want some extreme heat, even then there are much better choices!

Not as crazy as I was expecting but many of my friends can barely handle it :)

It really burns, the heat kicks in and keeps going up when you breathe :)

I cried... I had hiccups..... but I was expecting it to be kicking my ass more.

No ring of fire :)

Hot, but not just for hot's sake. Really good flavour.
