Butterfly Bakery Maple Sugar Shack Sriracha Hot Sauce

September 30, 2019

Butterfly Bakery of Vermont are actually…you guessed it… a bakery! They’ve been making hand-crafted, small-batch hot sauces since 2011. I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying a number of their products, and I must say that they have all been exceptional in flavour. Based in Montpelier, the bakery has a very rich history in supporting local pepper growers and farmers alike, with a sincere commitment to only using the highest-quality, local ingredients. I appreciate the fact too that they always mention the names of the producers of the ingredients on the label. It’s always great to show support for the locals who make these products possible!

We offer many of their products here at Chilly Chiles online and in-store, including Maple Wood Smoked Onion Hot Sauce, Cilantro Onion Hot Sauce, as well as a great variety of beer-based hot sauces and spicy mustards! Check them out!

The flavour profile of this one is sweet, lightly fruity, bold, and savoury. Serrano peppers from Maple Wind Farm bring a mild, fruity heat, with the organic white vinegar preserving the sauce while also adding just a bit of a tang. Garlic scapes from Eastview Farm add a mild zing and onion-y taste. In case you didn’t know (I didn’t), Garlic scapes are actually the tender stem and flower bud of a garlic plant. They usually taste like a blend of onion, scallion and garlic, and tend to have a fresher “greener” taste than the garlic bulbs. Pure Vermont maple syrup from Eastman Long & Sons adds a solid amount of deep sweetness to the sauce, while the salt adds a light touch of saltiness to balance out everything.  Quality over quantity is one of my firm beliefs when it comes to hot sauce. So, it comes as no surprise that I love how so few ingredients are used in this one. Sometimes you don’t need tons of ingredients in a sauce to make a well-balanced, flavourful product!

In terms of heat I would give this one a 1 out of 10. Everyone should be able to handle the mild heat! I would perhaps rate it as a 2 but given the fact that it’s got a pretty good level of sweetness, the hear of the serrano peppers are toned down from the possibility of being mild-medium on the heat scale. I truly think that anyone who enjoys a sweet sauce with a light kick should definitely give this one a try. What’s more, it’s a rather unique combination of local ingredients, and you really can taste the quality!

There are many ways you could use this Maple Sugar Shack Sriracha Hot Sauce. You can use it the same way you would use any other sriracha, while also enjoying the added complexity from the maple syrup and fresh ingredients! Add it to your rice or noodle stir fries, soups, shepherds pie, mac n cheese, ham or turkey sandwiches, fried tofu, and more. Use it also as a glaze on your BBQ ribs, chicken, or pork tenderloin. Enjoy this sauce with basically any dish that could use some sweetness and a tad of heat!

Come by one of our store locations and give Butterfly Bakery Maple Sugar Shack Sriracha Hot Sauce a try!

As always, Keep it spicy!

Alexis

Fat Cat Surprisingly Mild Guajillo Ghost Hot Sauce

November 06, 2019

It’s a robust sauce with a smoky, tangy, and savoury flavour profile. What sticks out the most to me are the smoky Guajillo peppers and the cumin. It really is a marriage made in heaven! Water gives the sauce a more liquid consistency and balances out the acidity and salinity while...

Clark + Hopkins Laos Hot Sauce

In case you’ve never heard of it, Laos is a small landlocked nation in Southeast Asia, known for its very spicy cuisine and various influences from all the surrounding countries. This hot sauce does a great job at combining fiery heat with a multi-layered flavour.

Hellfire Blueberry Hell Hot Sauce

October 23, 2019

This is one of my all-time favourites. It’s most probably my favourite super-hot fruit-based hot sauce I’ve ever had the pleasure to enjoy. When we usually hear “fruit-based hot sauce” we assume that makes its possible uses rather limited. That is not the case with Blueberry Hell, as I will discuss in more depth further down.

Brutal, very hot, taste was really bad

This was just stinking hot, tastes hotter than a lot of other sauces but the heat over powers you and it is not a great taste, was good for a hot wing challenge but I would use as recommended on the bottle to just add heat to something like soup or chili if you want some extreme heat, even then there are much better choices!

Not as crazy as I was expecting but many of my friends can barely handle it :)

It really burns, the heat kicks in and keeps going up when you breathe :)

I cried... I had hiccups..... but I was expecting it to be kicking my ass more.

No ring of fire :)
